Purple Bean Studio - Longarm Quilting
Making it possible to finish your quilt!

Purple Bean Studio
Colour, fabric, patchwork and quilting – fascinations that fit so beautifully together. My Mum taught me dressmaking from when I was old enough to stand next to her at her sewing machine. She imparted a love and awe of fabric and the special joy that only a button tin can bring.
With my discovery of patchwork came the challenge of fitting quilts through the neck of a sewing machine. After a couple of years quilting on a frame using a standard machine, I was lucky to be introduced to the Handi Quilter Fusion (24") with ProStitcher and have been happily exploring, learning and creating ever since. The computerised technology allows beautiful designs to be fitted into any space/block/sashing/border on your quilt. All custom work is done on my Hand Quilter Avante (18").
At my Purple Bean Studio, I offer a professional and affordable longarm quilting service. I have batting/wadding for sale: 100% cotton, 100% wool, 80/20 cotton/polyester and 100% polyester and a range of backing fabrics. I am also happy for you to supply your own batting and backing.
If you are in the area, you are welcome to come to my studio or I offer pick up and drop off locally. For those not around Bundaberg QLD I am used to working long distance, consulting over the phone or via email so please make sure to contact me.
If your next patchwork project beckons before you have quilted your current one - let me help you.

How to calculate the size of your quilt and estimate quilting charge:
Measure the length and the width in inches. Multiply length by width and divide by 144 (144” = 1 sq. foot). Multiply the result by the applicable charge above. Example: quilt 82” x 90” light E2E – 82 x 90 = 7,380 ÷ 144 = 51.25 x $3.00 = $153.75
Accepted Payment: cash, card (1.9% processing fee) and EFT (bank transfer)
Quilting Jargon and Preparation
Edge to Edge (E2E) – Also called Pantograph. A continuous repeated design worked from the outside edge of the quilt to the other, and repeated from top to bottom of the quilt. These patterns may vary from light, medium or heavy density stitching and E2E quilting allows for the use of one colour thread only over the entire quilt.
Border to Border (B2B) – an E2E design is used in the centre of the quilt and borders are quilted with a different pattern. It may be necessary to turn the quilt so it would be taken off the frame rotated and resecured.
Computerised custom – An E2E design with specific areas cropped from the pattern or particular computerised designs are fitted to different areas of the quilt. This may be block specific with sashing and borders utilising different designs and different thread colours.
Binding – Quilt will be trimmed and straight edge binding is machine sewn to the front of the quilt. Cutting and joining of binding fabric is offered and also machine or hemstitching the binding to the back.
Custom - Hand guided quilting using designs to complement your quilt style and design and may include thread colour changes.
-
Clip all threads on the front of your quilt top and remove any loose thread. Trim all long threads on back as they can show through light fabric.
-
Examine your quilt top making sure all seams are joined together correctly, no open seams.
-
Your quilt top should be free of embellishments such as buttons, charms, sequins etc.
-
Square your quilt top using your quilter’s ruler.
-
If your quilt top has lots of piecing on the outside border stay stitch within ¼” around the edge. This prevents seams from opening during machine quilting.
-
Press your quilt top. Seams should be pressed to one side or open.
-
Identify the head or top of your quilt top with a piece of paper pinned to the fabric. If backing has a top please mark this also.
-
Do not baste or pin your quilt together with batting and backing.
-
Your batting needs to be a minimum of 4" (10cm) wider than your quilt top on every side.
-
Your quilt backing needs to be a minimum of 5" (12.5cm) wider than your quilt top on every side.
-
Measure your quilt top across the top, middle and bottom horizontally and down both sides and the middle vertically. If any of the side measurements differ greatly to middle it may mean your quilt top will not sit flat and could have pleats, tucks, creases or fullness when finished.
-
If backing is pieced please ensure to complete the above steps for it also.
-
If joining backing please ensure all selvage is removed from seams, that seam allowance is larger than the normal ¼” and that the seams are pressed open.
-
A charge may be made for preparation services as required eg. large amount of threads left on your quilt.
Sorry if that seems a lot of advice but we want the best result. Let me know if you have any concerns or questions about your quilt.
